Newsletter Issue 115

Hello everyone,

Some sad news to begin with, I’m afraid. The oldest member of our club, Hugh Hart died on Thursday, I think. He was 94 but still playing both outdoors and in. In fact he played on Monday. Such a shock but so good that he was active to the end. He was in the police force in his younger days, a former director of the club and a good bowler with a keen sense of humour. My team members on a Monday morning and Friday afternoon will certainly miss him. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

I haven’t had the final report of the number of members who made use of the week-end opening on 1st and 2nd and 8th and 9th but I will announce it in next week’s newsletter. I do know that the Wessex A team took advantage of both Saturday mornings for some very useful practice.

A few of us played in Top Club on Sunday against Cotswold at Cotswold IBC in Stroud and I’m pleased to report that we won and are through to the next round on 23rd October against either Bristol or Nailsea.

Talking of Top Club, Nomid (a combination of Nottingham and MidGlos) won the Top Club award last week at Potters. We had a great time as usual. One of our teams missed getting into the last sixteen by two shots and both of the other teams were knocked out in the quarter finals. We put up a good show though.

The entertainment was, as usual, excellent. The final show was entitled “Simply the Best” and it was just that – the best we’ve ever seen! It is Potters’ centenary this year so they’d asked regulars which songs they’d liked best over the years and they showcased those with their brilliant technical production team enhancing both the songs and dancers. As good as the West End!

Howard and I always like to take a trip out to Horsey to see the wild grey seals when our bowling times allow it. This time, on Wednesday we weren’t bowling until 1.45pm so it gave us a free morning meaning that we could make it there and back in plenty of time to back comfortably for lunch.

Wow! It was well worth it. Five of us went, three of whom hadn’t been before. They were well impressed. It was mating time though so the males were very amorous! I think many of the females had a headache or would have preferred to have gone shopping! Howard, Bev and Dave Forshaw and I are back in December so we’re hoping to go again to see the pups.

It’s Sheila Kingswell’s quiz this Saturday and then, on 21st October, it’s “Wear it Pink” day. There could well be some sights to behold from what I’ve heard! Don’t miss it.

I am looking for a player on a Monday morning to play in my “Two Easy” team. If you are available, either see me or let reception know. I’d be very grateful. New players would be welcome. We all have to start somewhere.

Take care.

Linda.
