Happy New Year!

It doesn’t seem a whole year since I last wrote that. Hope you all had a good Christmas. We had a lovely time and Father Christmas brought some great presents.

Once again, I won’t be stuck for anything to watch on television since World Bowls 2024 started on Friday. It is being broadcast on YouTube. My only problem is that there aren’t enough hours in the day for me to watch everything, bowl myself and do all the other things that I have to do in a day!

Both the Wessex A and B teams were playing at home and away on Sunday. Wessex A were playing Fairford while Wessex B were against Cotswold B. The A team won convincingly while the B team only just lost overall. Once again, well done to everyone who took part.

At the moment our A team is top but we have played one more game than Cotswold A and Carterton who stand second and third respectively. However, our points mean that, even with a full house, we still can’t be beaten at the moment but the next few games are crucial. Fingers crossed! We’re all rooting for you guys.

On Saturday, we beat Malvern at their club in a friendly. The next friendly is on Wednesday at 13.00 against GL1 at GL1 followed on Saturday,14th January by Newport away at 14.00. As of Sunday, one more player was required.

The Wednesday evening Interclub competition resumes this Wednesday, 10th January at 19.00.

The first pairs matches begin on Tuesday evening, 9th January to be played on the rinks not currently used by the Tuesday evening league. The pairs league will run on alternate Tuesdays so leaving rinks available for competitions, be it internal or national.

Sadly, I have to announce the death of Brian Davies on 4th January. He had been receiving palliative care since Christmas.

He was a really good bowler who used to play outdoors with his best friend, Steve Pope who died a year ago.

For many years he was our “go to man” if we needed a coach or a minibus since he owned the “Eagle” bus company. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. His funeral is yet to be arranged but I will announce it as soon as it is.

I hope none of you has been flooded but, I’m sure many of you have been inconvenienced by road closures and diversions. My Dad told me to always live on a hill. We have always lived on high ground but I never realised how wise his advice was at the time.

Take care and keep warm (it was definitely chillier walking Molly today).
