Hello again,

Wow! Did you see the final of World Bowls? What a game! It really was a true final and between two “qualifiers”. It’s good to see some new names and faces coming through.

Talking of faces and World Bowls, did you see Margaret and Campbell McColl on Saturday in the crowd?

I now have a photo of Steve Pope whose death I announced recently.

Sadly, I have another death to announce. If you’ve been into the club last week, you will have seen that yet another photo is up at reception – that of Barrie Hesling.

He was a former chairman of the club, a regular quizmaster for our monthly quizzes and a great guy. His laugh was contagious and he was a natural entertainer with his many funny stories. He was the life and soul. However, for the last couple of years his health had deteriorated. He fought a brave battle but lost in the end. He will be a huge loss to the club. Our thoughts are with Anne through this very sad time.

Barrie’s funeral will be on 7th February at 12.00 noon at Gloucester Crematorium and afterwards at the club. It has been decided that the league that morning will be brought forward to a start time of 9.15a.m. so that those who wish to attend his funeral will have time to play and then arrive at the Crem. in time. If all players in a match are not going to the funeral then a normal 10am start is also fine.

A sheet will be on the notice board for those hoping to attend so that sufficient food can be ordered.

Tom Evans’s success was mentioned last week but it should be noted that he beat Tom Holmes of Malvern club at Malvern. Very well done, Tom E.! Good luck for the Area Final.

The results of the friendly against Newport last week came in too late to hit the newsletter. MidGlos suffered their first defeat of the season. What a shame. However, it’s not bad going to get to this point with only one defeat.

I do hope this isn’t a trend but I’ve just heard that MidGlos lost again in a friendly against Cheltenham on Sunday afternoon. I hope that we return to our winning streak next game.

Unfortunately, the ladies’ A team were beaten on Friday morning by the North Wilts A team in the Mason Trophy. However, we had a good run and did well to come that far. Onwards and upwards to come back fighting next season!

Much better news for MidGlos in the final of the Saturday Interclub against Cheltenham. We had a fairly ropey start but we dug in and won quite convincingly in the end. I’m pleased to announce that we had supporters in this time. I’m sure that’s what did it for us! Thank you to all who turned up. I hope you enjoyed the game. It certainly was exciting for the players. I hope it was for you too.

Thank you too to the volunteers who helped to make the morning run smoothly and of course the competition organiser Stan Lister and our President who handled the welcome and presentations so professionally.

Winners MidGlos

Runners-up Cheltenham Town

3rd place – Barnwood

4th place – Cheltenham Spa

I hope all the teams who entered enjoyed their matches.

Just another reminder to those of you playing on Tuesday morning, 7th February. The start time will be 9.15am if you are going to Barrie’s funeral.

Take care,

Linda
