Hello all,

Finally, I think I am on the road to recovery after nearly three weeks.

On Saturday our men were playing away (with the ladies’ permission!) at a neutral green and beat Bounds Green in the Denny Plate and progress to the National Quarter Finals on Saturday 28 January. Well done to all who played.

Also on Saturday, MidGlos came out on top in a closely fought friendly game away to Malvern Hills. Well done.

Yesterday, both Wessex A and B were playing Fairford and Cotswold B respectively. Wessex A won but our B team drew on points scored but only won one rink so missed out. Again well done to all who took part.

Recently, there have been far too many “no shows” for league matches. If you are unable to play, it is your duty to find a replacement. If you are unable to do so, please let your captain know. In these circumstances, your captain can approach any member willing to fill in with the opposing captain’s agreement.

Sadly, I have to announce that Joy Bloor died on 26th December. I remember her as a very jovial lady who arrived at about 11.00a.m. on a Thursday for a coffee before going on to play with the visually-impaired group, although her sight was good. Her funeral arrangements will be posted at the club. Unfortunately, due to ill-health, the group is no longer able to bowl. Very sad. They’ve been at the club for a considerable time.

The Wednesday evening interclub resumes this week with the postponed Saturday interclub being played this Saturday with the quiz later that evening.

Bacon baps will be served as usual for the interclub but unless more volunteers step forward, this service will cease in the near future.

Apart from Kath Hofmann and our cleaner, we all joined the club to bowl. Every other responsibility is carried out by volunteers. Until we have more members, we are not in a position to take on any more employees. Therefore we rely on volunteers. Our volunteer caterers have to forfeit the chance of playing in certain games due to catering commitments. They are tired of this situation.

We rely on the same people to volunteer all the time and it’s come to the point where they’ve had enough. So, the ball is in your court. It is your club and we need everyone to pull their weight or the services which we’ve too readily taken for granted will cease.

Rant over but please take it seriously.

Roger Fry has granted an extension to the play-by-date from 8th January to 15th to take account of the week lost to the snow and ice. Please endeavour to get your competitions played by the specified dates.

The really bad news is that more snow is on its way – due to hit around about 20th January. I suspect that this is courtesy of our American neighbours!

On that happy note, I’ll sign off.

Linda
