Newsletter Issue 96

Hi,

Although Monday’s date appears at the top, I actually write this on the Sunday. Just got back from Cheltenham having been to watch some of the open singles competition at Suffolk Square and a walk around the great variety of stalls at the Suffolks Sunday Market. Can’t believe we’re nearly in June – it was freeeezing!

However, the sun is out now and it’s an entirely different story! If you’ve never done the Sunday Market, it’s well worth it. It was a first for me in more than one way –          a. I’ve never been before and

              b. I’ve never bought a Christmas present in May!

No more mention of Christmas, I promise.

First of all – Australian Pairs is a “go”. We have sufficient players (just) to field six teams – Kangaroos, Dingos, Kookaburras, Wombats, Wallabies and Koalas. The first matches are to be played on 8th June, every Wednesday until the final one on 7th September.

Next Sunday is the Jubilee Garden Party outside, weather permitting! The forecast is not looking promising. However, we’ll just have it indoors instead which will be a shame since the grass was cut yesterday (Saturday) and looks very smart.

The second phase of the light fitting also took place yesterday. There are now just two rows of lights to be changed (probably in the next couple of weeks).

Thought you’d like to see a photo of “men at work” – actually a well-earned bacon/sausage bap break!

We are very privileged to have a TV personality heading up the team.

Noddy featured in last week’s “SOS The Big Build” down in Bristol. He also worked on the Charlton Kings project to be shown on 14th June (I think). So far he’s worked on six of the projects. Hats off to Noddy. He takes holiday from work and pays for his own accommodation as does each of the volunteers and he tells me that the work really is completed in the allocated nine days.

A huge well done to all those generous, kindhearted people. The other nice thing he said was that none of the professionals is too proud or full of themselves to speak to the folks who come along to offer their services.

It’s good to see that one of our members was taking health and safety seriously even though he looked anything but stylish!

The headless man is indeed Mr TV personality of the club. I believe he’s taking orders for his autograph! He’s aided by a far lesser mortal – our very own Graham Whiting.

I do like to see a man on his knees! Judging by the way poor Frank was walking after the first session, he may well be on his knees today. I hope not.

I had heard that a certain chairman had been seen walking behind the hoover on the rinks after the first phase. Since I hadn’t witnessed this, I thought it was a figment of that person’s imagination. However, I now have proof! I guess it’s because it looks like a big lawnmower that he’s able to work it!!!

Seriously, thank you to all those involved again.

Just another reminder of the open gardens on 12th June and the next quiz on 18th June will be run by Steve and Tricia Bluck since Sheila’s not available that day. She’ll do the one on 16th July instead.

That’s it for now. Hope to see you next week at the club and at the garden party.

Linda.
