Newsletter Issue 91

Hello everyone,

The Club Competitions have finally been completed with the last one being played on the morning of the Presentation Evening – last minute or what?! As with many of the competitions this year, the delay was down to Covid followed by a pre-booked holiday away.

It was the ladies’ over 65 four wood singles between Bev Forshaw and Pam Margrett. It was a very close match in which the lead kept changing with Bev eventually winning. Well done both – an exciting game to watch.

Unfortunately, we didn’t do a head count on the night but both the lounge and the Cooper Suite were full for the Presentation Evening. From the feedback received, it went down very well.

Sandy Kerr, in particular, had put a lot of effort and time into ensuring its smooth-running. Thanks must go too to Steve Bluck for his hard work in running the leagues and to Campbell McColl for running the Wednesday evening Interclub Competition. Incidentally, he will be asking clubs to consider increasing the length of the matches from 16 to 18 ends. I, for one, would support this but those involved in these matches will have the chance for their say.

Our President, Ken Manns performed his task admirably and our Chairman, Howard provided a little light-hearted humour at Steve Knight’s expense (Steve does know about it). Thanks too to Steve and Tricia Bluck for organising the buffet and to Jean and John Philbrick and Wilma and Martyn Ross for manning the bar.

While standing in the queue to be served at the bar, you will have seen the notices asking for more help with bar duties. As with all these tasks, the more people who sign up, the less frequently your turn will come round. Full training will be given. It’s quite simple, without the staff to run it, this facility will have to close which would be a shame

The final amount collected for the Ukraine Appeal was £521.00 – there was an extra £50.00 for the use of our overflow car park on a few Saturdays by the football club next door. The money has gone to the Mail Force Charity in support of the Ukraine Refugee Appeal. Thank you again for your generosity.

Sadly, I have to report another death. A former member, Evelyn Kendall died on Thursday, 21st April. She had been well, although somewhat frail, until recently when she had a couple of falls. She was taken into a home but died, I believe, of/with Covid. I never knew her but I’ve been told she was a lovely lady and a sportswoman of some prowess.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, if you would like to donate towards the replacement LED light fittings, the information you need is there. Thank you to those who have already done so. Believe me, it will be such an improvement. Work starts on Wednesday 18th May led by our member and “resident” electrician “Noddy” Holder. I believe, Graham Whiting will be getting together a work party/ parties for the number of days it takes to complete the job.

As we are all well aware, it is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year. To mark the occasion, we are having a Garden Party on Sunday, 5th June starting at 3.00p.m. A poster to that effect will be going up in the Club advertising afternoon tea, the bar, a Royal Quiz and a raffle. The cost will be £6.00 per head and, nearer the time there will be a list to sign of your intention to attend and offers of homemade cakes and scones.

On the following Sunday, 12th June, MidGlos is again opening up our car park and supplying tea/coffee and cakes for the National Gardens event for the local houses who are showing off their gardens. Despite the very wet weather last year, this event was well-supported. Fingers crossed for the weather to be kinder and therefore for there to be an even better turnout. Again we will be asking for homemade cakes and volunteers to give up a couple of hours to serve the guests.

Finally, a host of photos were taken on the Presentation Evening. Here is just a flavour. However, should you like a copy of one in which you appeared, just e-mail your request to reception.

Have a good week,

Linda.
