Hello,

August already! I can’t believe it! It’s nearly the winter season: more of that later.

On 19th July a group of children from a primary school in Abbeymead came with the project leader, Amy, the headteacher and a couple of other adults to experience the game of Bowls. As part of their project on the Commonwealth Games, they are trying to experience as many of the sports involved as possible.

They were expecting to watch a demonstration but were delighted to hear that they were actually going to try it for themselves.

They were split into three rinks led by Sandy, Shirley and Howard assisted by Andy Price and Colin Carter. Dai Jones came along to take photographs.

The children, including Charlie who was in a wheelchair enjoyed their hour and a quarter at MidGlos.

The staff, who were very impressed with the facilities, were encouraged to join in too.

I don’t know about the adults but some of the children showed real promise.

The visit was enjoyed so much that they would like a return visit. There is also another school interested in the same sort of experience.

Sadly, on 25th July, Albert (Ginger) Parker lost his fight with cancer. His last few years were spent stoically battling the disease. Whenever I asked him how he was, his answer with a smile, was always “I’m still here”. He was a very good bowler and a lovely man. He continued to bowl throughout his gruelling treatment when he was really quite weak. A very brave man who will be missed at the club. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.

Steve Bluck has asked me to remind you that it’s that time of year again – it is time to enter your teams for the new season. You can e-mail Steve directly, enter the teams in the book at reception or telephone the office. Incidentally the new season begins on Monday 19th September.

Elly Underhill has asked me to put in a PLEA for her. She needs more volunteers for the office. She has lost three for various reasons but, as with everything, the more the merrier. The more who step forward, the lighter the load for all. Again you can contact Elly directly or leave a message at the office.

On a personal note, I am putting in a plea too. I need more players on a Friday afternoon in order to fill my team, Strollers. If you would like to join, please contact me or by the usual route via the office. It would be sad to lose the team but we can’t function without more players.

If any other captains are struggling for members, please just contact me and I will include a request in the newsletter.

Take care everyone,

Linda.
